Sitting here on my terrace in Venice after spending the day touring the islands of Murano and Burano. We set out early to San Marco square to catch a boat to the island of Murano – famous for its glass blowing factories. Upon arrival, we were whisked into a factory for their glass making demonstration. Sad to say it was disappointing. For starters it was quite warm and humid outside. Inside the factory next to the ovens it was crazy hot and uncomfortable. The demonstration only lasted about 5 minutes and I’m not really sure the kids or I learned much…after the demonstration you are encouraged to shop in the showroom. However every shop owner we encountered seemed terrified by the thought of two young boys in their shop – so we felt unwanted and frankly mistreated. There is not much else to do on the island other than shop for handmade glass items. In all, I would not recommend Murano if your kids are under 10 years of age.

We then caught a boat to the island of Burano. Burano is well known for its lace and its brightly painted buildings. It was lovely. We had a nice stroll through the village and the kids enjoyed picking their favorite colored houses and browsing in the souvenir shops. We had a yummy ice cream cone and hopped back on the boat for about an hour long journey back to Venice. Overall a great day – but remember Burano not Murano for kids😉.
